Are you someone who loves to make others laugh, even when they are in the worst phases of their lives? Do you think you have enough potential to make a frowning face smile? How many jokes have you got in your carriage of laughter? You deserve to be a standup comedian if you are able to do any of the mentioned things. A standup comedian is someone who performs right in front of live audience, generally speaking directly to them and addressing them at times in the middle of the entertaining conversation. He is a spontaneous performer who makes jokes on every little thing that is either pre-planned or happens all of a sudden. His quickness is something that makes the audience entertained and drawn towards his performances.
If you think you have it in you to become a successful standup comedian, then we are here to give you a few tips to turn you into a successful one:
1) Write down your jokes:
Thoughts, creativity and jokes strike down at any point of time in the day. Therefore, it is essential for you to jot these jokes down whenever you get time. The best thing to do is carry a pocket sized diary with you everywhere you go, along with a palm sized pen. Keep this set handy when you think you have got a few jokes in your mind and write them down, even if you have less time to write them completely. Noting them down is an essential task as you are going to need them in future as well. Moreover, if you jot down your jokes, you won’t be repeating them in your performance and hence your act will have fresh and innovative concepts that have not been shown before.
2) Read about comedy and jokes:
It is necessary for you to read about comedy and jokes. There are various informational books available as softcopies as well as hardcopies, which you can pick up easily from the shelf of your library. If you are not a member of any library, enroll yourself in one and get started with reading different kinds of books on comedy and jokes, even if you have to start with the invention of the term ‘comedy’. The more knowledge you have about your own profession, the stronger you will be able to perform to give justice to what you wish to do.
3) Watch stand-up comedians:
There are various shows that are aired on the TV and hence you should watch the performances of standup comedians as much as you can, so that you are able to get an idea about how they perform and why they are liked by others. Once you get to know about how they behave on stage and what people expect you to do, you are able to find your standup comedian idols and keep their performances as benchmarks for your own acts. Thus, watch others to be inspired and become an inspiration in the coming time.
4) Work on your personality:
We don’t tell you to build six packs if you are a man or a skinny figure if you are a woman in order to have a good personality to become a standup comedian; all we suggest you to do is work on your personality a bit as it is essential for you to charm others by your aura since you are supposed to do the whole act of comedy in front of mass audience. This audience, at times, does not even blink when the standup comedians talk and make fun of each and every little thing that comes into their minds. Therefore, you need to focus on building such a personality that lets you control the stage as well as the eyes of the audience.
5) Practice in front of a huge mirror:
If you don’t have a mirror that lets you see the whole of you, buy one and fix it on the wall in your room. Unless you don’t see yourself performing in front of the mirror, you won’t get to know the reason behind different kinds of reactions that you get from the audiences. Therefore, perform right in front of a big mirror so that you are able to see your postures, actions, style and creativity on the stage. It also helps you build confidence as your mind thinks that the mirror is nothing but actual audience that has gathered together to witness your standup comedy performance. Remember the saying – a best critic is always the one who criticizes himself. So, leave no room for improvement and groom yourself in the most efficient manner, so that you are able to get the most out of the time that you have been given to perform on stage.
6) Find a job as a standup comedian:
Go to restaurants, night clubs, pubs, and other such places that are looking forward to hire standup comedians. Once you know there’s a vacancy nearby, put in your resume and work your best during the rounds of interview. Once you are selected, you have the whole stage right in front of you with audience that has the ears to listen to what you’ve got to say. Utilize this space and make the best use of it, especially to gather the attention of people and make them remember your sense of humor all their lives.
7) Learn by experiences:
If not one, work in two to three pubs or different places altogether as a standup comedian in order to gain experience and use it as a weapon to make the audience laugh in a much better way the next time you stand in front of them to perform. Also, you can always call in your friends to come home and watch you and your team members perform the standup act so that you are able to get some amount of motivation and support from the known people around you. However, even if they don’t like your comedy, don’t get disappointed. There has got to be something in you, which has made you think that you deserve a place on stage, right in front of the audience, making them laugh and cherish the moments of happiness. Therefore, keep faith and be confident about what you choose as your career.
