Now that college is over and the world looks at you with gleeful eyes, the big question is ‘What Next’? Such a question plagues the minds of many youngsters, and hence most of them are confused. We all want to be the next ‘millionaire’, ‘business tycoon’, ‘famous celebrity’ or someone who wants to ‘change the world’, great! However, what you need now is a kick-start, a launching pad that would bring in the right motivation of sorts. Here are a few tips on how to choose the right career. Please read on and be well-informed for the same.
Your personality says it all
You may be cut out to be a great leader in the future, but you have to be realistic and make money too. Start out with knowing yourself before you walk out into the world to make a difference. Check with your innate persona; your individuality is what most potential employers would want to bring to the table, irrespective of the career you embark on. When you know your personality well and would want to further correlate it to your ‘career needs’, the path towards career making would unfold. Speak to a ‘career counselor’ to make the right ‘first move’.
Attend career workshops
These days one gets to hear about many ‘career workshops and fairs’ happening around the nation, some of them are for free. Check the local listings, ask the career cell at college to help you with the same and enroll for free workshops. It is at these workshops where one would learn about individual interests, hobbies and personal tastes, and also on how to inculcate them into what you want to pursue ahead. Check the areas of interest you seem to be drawn into, it could be art, computers, fashion, lifestyle, teaching, finance, engineering, media etc, and notice how best they match with your interests so far.
Skill vs the Will
It is not more of a ‘skill issue’ than that of a ‘will issue’, which hampers our progress towards the right path in career making choices. What one has to realize is that job satisfaction or choosing the right career which would allow one to make their money and enjoy the tasks being given is more of a ‘will’ issue, skills can be learnt or upgraded at any given point of time. If you will it, you shall have it!
Plan ahead
Apart from attending workshops, sitting for career counselling talks and sessions, and making the right choices or narrowing the ones around, one has to be ready to relocate at moments notice. Companies these days require their task force to travel extensively, especially if the job is unconventional. For example, media students and fashion students have to be ready to live out of the suitcase. Be prepared for ‘out of home’ opportunities, should you embark on such a career. If living and working in the city you were born is your preference, stick by that and make it very clear to yourself before coming into the career oriented sphere.
One must do a little homework on what motivates the soul and how to go about getting the goals accomplished at the end of the day. Making a career is for lifetime, and sometimes many jobs teach us more, rather than sticking to one domain!
