Creating successful leaders out of devoted students depend upon the instinct of teachers and ways in which they are able to engage students in the learning process. Student engagement should be the key focus of any student and teacher engagement. As a teacher if you are able to engage the students creatively in the subject, chances are bright that you will make them progress in their chosen career fields.
Below are listed ways in which you can promote student engagement and put them firmly on the path of learning.
Make Student Self Believers
Self belief is the biggest mantra of success and the same holds true when it comes to engaging students. If you are able to make students self believers, chances are bright that they will engage in the learning process more keenly. You need to create confidence in the students that they can achieve the best. Make them learn from their failures and give them the confidence of learning from their mistakes. More the students start believing in themselves, better are the prospects of them paying attention in the class and engrossing themselves in the learning process.
Create a Teacher Friendly Atmosphere
As a teacher it is your prime responsibility to create an atmosphere where the students start believing in you. If the students find the teachers approachable, this is likely to stimulate the learning process. The students would want to get into an engaging dialogue with the teacher and will come to you to clear their doubts on any of the topics.
Understand Student’s Expectations
Students play a pivotal role in deciding your worth as a teacher. It is your sole responsibility to understand student’s expectations and adapt to their needs. Most of the teachers tend to stick to their teaching methods which are beyond the learning capacities of the students, and hence, the aftermath is never valuable.
Engage in a creative dialogue with your students so as to create an atmosphere where you are able to understand student’s expectations. The idea is to be a tutor and a friend to the students. If you are able to fulfil this objective, you will create a natural engaging atmosphere for the students and they will in all likelihood engage with you and engross themselves in the subject learning new facts.
Creating Intellectual Classrooms
As a teacher you should ideally begin your session with an exercise which over 90 percent of the students can do on their own. The idea is to motivate the students to be a part of the learning process where they feel confident of enhancing their skills. This way, the students will be able to engage themselves and you could gradually move on to tough topics easily.
The students will feel confident enough and wherever they get stuck, they will come back to you for finding answers to their queries.
Promote Interaction among Students
Student interaction is a key fact which you need to promote when it comes to creating an engaging atmosphere. The best way of doing so is to work on group interaction module. Once a week, you could hold a group discussion session where students can air their suggestions and engage in a creative dialogue. This will create a positive ambiance in the classroom and even the mediocre students will feel confident to be a part of such a group.
Encourage Students to Summarize their Learning
In countries like Japan, students are encouraged to devote the last five minutes of the session to summarize their thoughts and pen it down. This gives an opportunity to the student to memorize all they have learnt during the course of the class.
Simultaneously, the students will have to pay attention to the topic they have learnt during the period as they know that they will have to summarize the same during the end of the classroom session. This is likely to create a learning atmosphere in the classroom and the students will be motivated to engage in a creative dialogue.
Give a Demonstration Session
Student engagement is not a one day affair. It would work to your advantage if you are able to demonstrate the process to your students. Tell them the ways in which they can create an engaging atmosphere. Do not forget to highlight the advantages of appealing study.
Alternatively, you can also hold an audio visual session where various student engagement techniques are highlighted. At the end of the demonstration session, you can ask students to interact among themselves and with you to get clarity on facts which they feel are still questionable.
Teach Students the Practice of Patience
Your students need to realize the importance of patience. Student engagement is not possible till the students become patient. Some topics are complicated enough to be understood in a single session. This can create discord among students and your idea of creating an engaging atmosphere can go haywire. Teach them the practice of patience and your students will understand the benefits of commitment in a better manner.
Setting Rules of Engagement
You need to create some set of rules for engaging students in a fruitful discussion. This can be in form of creating groups of students who will discuss among themselves on the various aspects of the topic after the end of the session. This will induce a positive ambiance in the classroom and your students will feel confident on the knowledge they gain during their interaction with you.
Encourage Student Assistance
You should be able to create an atmosphere where the students have no fear of the teacher. An engaging atmosphere gets created in a natural course when the students feel connected to you. Ask the students to assist you in preparing notes for the lecture.
This way you will be able to create confidence in the students and they will engage in a healthy discussion with their fellow students and other teachers while seeking their assistance in preparing notes for the lecture. This can be taken as a test assignment and soon you will notice students start paying attention and seriousness to the same.
